You get to know them, you get to find out how to lead them and you have to embrace the fact they are different. And then all of a sudden at the end of practice, and theyre following this protocol, a buzzer goes off and they go from one drill to the next. And this is one of the worlds great universities. So obviously lets change the order. And it changed, it changed her cerebral fabric. I think theyre an amazing thing that really sets the tone for a whole organization. The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. They want to be considered excellent for desiring to be held exempt from all accountability. Now thats typical of the Millennials. She needs to live. So if we have 30 players in the roster, in the 28 different categories everyones ranked from 1 to 30. Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. And youll appreciate this because youre a woman. And again, this solve the problem you and I were just talking about. If you guys learn one thing from me today, make sure your HR person has incredible insights into hiring the right people because your HR person is going to determine whether or not your company is going to be successful or not. And I was thinking you know what, thats what Ive got to do. And Im looking at this thinking, you know, well this is all Ive done my whole life. Ive had so many train wreck failures in leadership I dont know, I could write a book on failing to develop leaders.

Anson has 40 years in his coaching career and he's lost less than 70 games. So heres the advantage of this. Anson: Absolutely. And I loved it. If this button doesnt work, youve got to find a different button. [Laughs.] It can save the United States, but it has to be done in the right way. All these kids that Ive convinced to transfer have gone someplace and maybe played more minutes, and then some of these kids now and I have connected in the most positive way, just because now theyve looked back and seen that Ive treated them very well. Anson: So basically we have this hidden language the players know that Im using with the press thats designed to sort of protect them, but also designed to let them know theyre not good enough yet. And I cant forget to admit he also had 5 players on stage at the World Cup last week. So not only do we have 28 different categories, but all the categories have different value, and some of the value is extraordinary if you dont achieve in it you dont even get to practice with us. And of course these are, you know, very successful CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and their top managerial staff, and every one of them has paid like, you know, $20,000 to be in the room, and of course theyre righteously indignant with this incredibly successful man telling them to fall on the bottom 10% of their workforce. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. And so I had all these ridiculous core values that I was expecting everyone to live by, but no one really lived by them except if it was a coincidence. And heres whats critical in the performance review. Lauren Constable, VP of Operations, This thing is amazing. And my last question, and this is a fun question that we actually ask all of our new hires when they start at Eagle Hill, is if you could have 1 superpower, what would it be and why? Yep, I dont work very hard. And I learned about this when I was working for Franklin Covey. That is correct - 22 national titles. And I want to sit there and I want to get $100,000 for sitting there and just answering questions. All the different elements that are critical for our success in a practice and a game were recorded by the managers and then posted on the bulletin board. I looked down at this thing and I was stunned. I want them to win national championships. And when they dont sign a pro contract its not because I havent told them the areas where they have fallen. And Ive learned that youre not going to change everyone. He has won 22 National Championships and is the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. Cause you know, all you did for me is tell me this wasnt good enough. And so thats my main job. Because theyve been filled with absolute garbage from their parents and often from their youth coaches. Sam: First question. Anson: Okay. They guide the players from season to season, practice to practice, minute to minute. And theyre all forced to memorize this, The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. So any time we catch anyone whining in our program theyre forced to recite that. I read every business book that, you know, makes the New York Times top 10 bestseller list. What is our test? And as impressive as that is, h Its not gonna work.

That should be your perspective, is your bottom line, and heres the way you construct the most aggressive bottom line. Every one of them has memorized that. The first slide had the year 1969 on it. Weve got all kinds of missions, a part of the mission is the athletic one, but believe it or not within this culture of a university context, its actually the third most important. They dont want to be accountable. Anson: Its to save your bottom line. So its not an email you can send out to your 6,000 employees and hope to lead them. The second most important thing is the competitive cauldron, and the final thing is my other function is to take everyones personal narrative to the truth. When I went to Columbia, we had just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. Dorrance challenges his players to commit to accomplishing something greatfor the team and for themselvesand following a set of common values has helped to create a winning culture. And of course hes nodding and hes not contradicting anyone. First of all, they get immediate feedback, but the other advantage is, they want to get to the top and they will know if theyre not pushing hard enough or working hard enough. So I have also read that you sit down with your players once a year to kind of do an overall player evaluation. So I pulled her aside and I said, you know, so-and-so, Im sorry, but shut up.

The professor had some literature that I found so powerful that I now use it with my team. And basically you have a strong man running everything. And of course you hire Millennials. In my experience its a crock. They do not want to excel. If they are below the line and theyre on scholarship, I try to get them to transfer. Were not going to memorize poetry. Melissa: So do you incorporate your core values back into your recruiting process? And again, as I mentioned earlier, I read reams of business books.
